Tottenham Hotspur have made headlines by sacking head coach Ange Postecoglou just two weeks after he guided the club to a historic 1– 0 win over Manchester United in the UEFA Europa League final. The victory marked Spurs’ first major trophy in 17 years and was seen by many as the start of a new era but the club’s Premier League form told a different story.

Europa League Success Overshadowed by Domestic Failure

While Postecoglou delivered silverware on the European stage, Tottenham’s domestic campaign was disastrous. The club finished 17th in the 2024/25 Premier League season, narrowly avoiding relegation with only 38 points from 38 matches  their worst league finish since 1977. The board, led by chairman Daniel Levy, stated that while European success was appreciated, consistent domestic performance was essential for the club’s long-term strategy.

Financial Impact and Search for a Replacement

Postecoglou is expected to receive a compensation package of approximately £6 million following the early termination of his contract. Tottenham have already begun their search for a new manager. Brentford’s Thomas Frank is currently the leading candidate, though Spurs may have to pay his £10 million release clause. Other potential names being considered include Marco Silva (Fulham), Andoni Iraola (Bournemouth), and Oliver Glasner (Crystal Palace).

Fan Reactions and What Lies Ahead

Reactions from the Tottenham fan base have been mixed. While many supported the decision based on league results, others voiced disappointment over parting ways with a coach who had finally brought European success to the club. Postecoglou himself expressed pride in his short tenure, highlighting the Europa League victory as a step forward for the squad.

Looking ahead, Tottenham will face Paris Saint-Germain in the UEFA Super Cup on August 13, 2025. The club is determined to have a new manager in place before preseason preparations begin.
